Colonel Mahmoud Ahmed Maatouq, who served as the director of Seydnayah Prison, died yesterday, on a Friday. Opposition sources attribute his death to a heart attack, while local reports from his home village of Fidio, located south of Latakia, suggest he died in service during combat on the Harasta front.
Maatouq was a central figure implicated in the torture and maltreatment of detainees at Seydnayah Prison. He succeeded Brigadier General Talaat Mahfoud, who himself was implicated in the 2008 massacre at Seydnayah Prison and was later killed in a Free Syrian Army ambush in May 2013.
